Crime

Basic facts about Crime

Generally speaking, the police investigate criminal complaints.  When the investigation is complete the case is passed to the Crown Prosecution Service who decide whether or not to take the case to court.  During the investigation a suspect is usually interviewed by the police under caution; During this interview it is advisable that the interviewee is represented by a solicitor who is specially trained to advise and make sure the process is fair.

If a case goes to court and the defendant denies the charge, the burden of proving the case rests with the prosecution who must satisfy the court (Magistrates or jury) so that they are sure of guilt.

The service offered by this department is to protect the interests of all those accused of Crime.  This may involve a motoring offence or an allegation of murder.  Many clients will be entitled to legal aid and if this is so we will help you apply.  If you are not eligible for legal aid or you wish to instruct us privately we will be able to give a clear indication of how much your case is likely to cost.  Please note that you may be able to recover some of your costs if you are acquitted.

The Criminal Department is led by Rakeebah Rahim and Deniz Oguzkanli.
